Assignment 7: Discovering Light
Assignment Date:
Thursday, October 28, 2021
Reflection:
This assignment was very intimidating to start. I spent a lot of time gathering the supplies needed to set up my studio space. I only had 1 window in my house that was free enough to accommodate the set up and then it rained for 3 days straight. I think the overcast sky actually helped soften the light coming in the window, but I didn’t know that was going to happen before I started, so I thought my photo shoot was going to be doomed.
Over the weekend my daughters picked out these gourds and I thought they’d be fun to photograph. I think they have a lot of personality and definitely offer a lot of texture to experiment with. I think my favorite image was the High Key photograph. It was so satisfying to go through the whole set up, adjust the white balance, test the exposure, and then actually achieve the image I was trying for.
I also had a lot of fun with the light painting. It was very difficult to get the focus correct – I have a lot of attempts where the light was really interesting, but the gourds were all out of focus. I’m excited to try this out in other settings and situations.
